Helmshore is at her most beautiful in Spring. The trees are unfurling their leaves, and blossom is appearing in all the hedgerows.

The spring flowers are appearing all over the Valley, and butterflies are flitting around after emerging from hibernation.

The birds are in full colour, as the breeding season in underway. The garden has been busy with a variety of visitors; some of whom are new editions this year.

Further afield in Musbury valley, the Roe deer are beginning to prepare for calving. They are barking when people are near as they begin to defend territory.

The birds are in fine voice, I captured a wren singing joyfully. It was a fine song to hear in the early morning. Further down the valley, the fields were busy with reed buntings and stonechats. I captured a terribly focused action shot of a female stonechat taking off from a post, but the pose made me laugh, so I’ve included it!

At night, the Tawny Owls are calling across the trees. Despite dogged attempts, I have still not managed to photograph one. perhaps as the days lengthen and they need to hunt to feed their chicks, I’ll have more luck! I did manage to video the local owl hooting; it sounds like it has a sore throat.
Back in the van shortly to visit Morecambe bay, I am looking forward to seeing some shore birds and waders.
