Bolton-le-Sands: weekend with friends

I love the solitude of a weekend in the van, but it’s great to share our time away with friends. Last weekend for Mark’s birthday weekend, we stayed at the wonderful Red Bank Farm in Bolton-le-Sands with our fellow van family, Trevor and Sarah. Our pitches looked west over Morecombe Bay and we were treated to a fabulous view of the sunset each evening.

Our pitch was also next to the lambing field: Pepper was most put out by them teasing her through the fence.

Despite our proximity to the water, I did not see much in the way of bird life. The beaches were teaming with people and dogs in the beautiful weather (us included) so the birds clearly found other locations to forage.

I did spot some Shellducks, black headed gulls and a brief glimpse of a Little Egret, but other shore birds were lacking.

A little further in-land, there were plenty of larks in the long grass. But most exciting was the arrival of Swallows. I know one doesn’t make a summer, but there were at least 6!

On Saturday, we walked along the canal to the Royal Hotel for lunch. https://www.royalhotelboltonlesands.co.uk

The beer garden is fabulous and a great sun trap. We had a couple of lovely starters to keep us going as the BBQ made an appearance on Saturday night for the main event; Cote-de-Boeuf and Prawns

We ended the day with a couple of glasses of wine, and a fine view of the full moon in the east, and the sunset to the west. A perfect end to the weekend

I’m Sal, a writer drawn to the quiet magic of the natural world. My blog gathers the moments that shape a week: the first light over the hills, the call of winter birds, a walk that becomes a memory. I write about landscapes, seasons, travel, and the gentle threads that connect us to place.

Most of these moments are shared with Pepper, my ever-enthusiastic companion, who reminds me daily that even the simplest walk can hold a little wonder. Together, we explore the magic tucked inside an ordinary life — the kind you only notice when you slow down, look closely, and let the world reveal itself one small moment at a time.
