A mid week work trip; Elstree

No van, but I was working in London this week, and stayed at the Grims Dyke hotel, at Old Redding. Just across the road is the entrance to Bentley Priory and I got up early to explore the trail. It’s a breeding ground for Whitethroats, so I wandered through the Spring Meadow, camera in toe to see what I could find in the brief hour I had free.

They were definitely there, and I saw a few flitting amongst the trees, but sadly I did not have time to stand a wait for a good shot; the perils of having to work!

I did spot several Golden Eyes in the distance across the water. The shot was not great; they were a long way off, but it’s another one ticked off the long list of birds I want to photograph.

There is a deer park in the reserve, and the Muntjac were enjoying the early morning sun. A cheeky jackdaw was taking the opportunity to gather some bedding to line a nest.

My route back to the hotel took me through the bluebells which are all in bloom.

I was sadly disappointed but the lack of whitethroats, but I am back in a couple of weeks, so hopefully I’ll have better luck then.

The next trip is Beadnell Bay at Easter; I’m expecting great things from the birds!

I’m Sal, a writer drawn to the quiet magic of the natural world. My blog gathers the moments that shape a week: the first light over the hills, the call of winter birds, a walk that becomes a memory. I write about landscapes, seasons, travel, and the gentle threads that connect us to place.

Most of these moments are shared with Pepper, my ever-enthusiastic companion, who reminds me daily that even the simplest walk can hold a little wonder. Together, we explore the magic tucked inside an ordinary life — the kind you only notice when you slow down, look closely, and let the world reveal itself one small moment at a time.
