Helmshore: Patience rewarded!

Helmshore: Patience rewarded!

You’ll have to wait until the end to see what I’m on about!

The garden has been really quite for birds this last few weeks. The feeders, which are usually empty by lunchtime are lasting several days.

Wood pigeons and sparrows are proving to be the exception; they never turn down seed!

I’ve spent much of the week, stalking the hills around Musbury looking in vain for the cuckoo. I can confirm it is still there, I heard it faintly on Wednesday evening but it has not been visible. It’s in the first 10 seconds of the video.

Walking back down the valley on Wednesday, I spotted a lone buzzard circled for several minutes in front of the iconic rocks of Musbury Tor.

Whilst I was watching the buzzard, a kestrel took off from the ground near me. I was not fast enough to get a clear focus, so this one is a little blurry.

The doe was watching me; her coat red in the evening sun, but she still declined to show her kids to me!

There were also a number of swifts around Wavel garage; I did not manage to get any good pictures of these. I’ll have to keep trying. I also spied a woolly caterpillar, which I have not yet managed to identify.

On Thursday I took a rest from my relentless stalking of the cuckoo and the roe deer kids, and walked around the River Ogden paths. I saw this proud mama mallard with her brood taking in the sunshine.

There was also a sleek racing pigeon taking a rest on a garden fence. It was very curious about my camera!

On Friday morning, I returned to my usual morning walk around Musbury Valley. The sun was warm and I spotted this lamb; it is definitely smiling!

There were a couple of stonechats in the long grass and a lone roe deer buck who was only too happy to show all his best poses.

The highlight of the week was my patience being rewarded at last; the doe showed me her kids!

I’ll leave it there; I can’t beat that sight!

I’m Sal, a writer drawn to the quiet magic of the natural world. My blog gathers the moments that shape a week: the first light over the hills, the call of winter birds, a walk that becomes a memory. I write about landscapes, seasons, travel, and the gentle threads that connect us to place.

Most of these moments are shared with Pepper, my ever-enthusiastic companion, who reminds me daily that even the simplest walk can hold a little wonder. Together, we explore the magic tucked inside an ordinary life — the kind you only notice when you slow down, look closely, and let the world reveal itself one small moment at a time.
