Hope: Quiet weekend in July

Hope: Quiet weekend in July

It’s been a busy couple of weeks., so we took a day off work and did an extended weekend away in the beautiful village of Hope.

Pepper certainly enjoyed some downtime, taking the opportunity to sleep in late every morning. She must be the only dog that has to be forced out of bed before lunchtime!

10am and still snoring!

On Saturday, I did a nice run around the Thornhill trail. It’s started badly after I was attacked for no reason by an angry wasp. Let’s be clear; it flew into my shorts and got stuck, there was no need to sting me whilst I was gently helping it out!

On Sunday, whilst Mark was out on his bike, Pepper and I did a lovely wander along the river Noe and into Aston.

Pepper discovered a love of train spotting whilst I was watching a pair of Kestrel’s dancing in the sky above the tracks

We also met a scruffy robin, mid moult, singing on the telephone wires.

In the valley bottom, there were plenty of juvenile birds finding their feet; I really love the mottled plumage of young robins before they turn the familiar red!

Later, we wandered into Hope village for a delightful Sunday lunch at the Old Hall Hotel . We picked up some cakes at the tea room to take back to the van; I went for Raspberry Meringue, which was delicious.

On Sunday evening, we enjoyed the late sunshine outside the van, watching the Lionesses win their trophy before retiring to watch a film inside; a perfect weekend 🥰

I’m Sal, a writer drawn to the quiet magic of the natural world. My blog gathers the moments that shape a week: the first light over the hills, the call of winter birds, a walk that becomes a memory. I write about landscapes, seasons, travel, and the gentle threads that connect us to place.

Most of these moments are shared with Pepper, my ever-enthusiastic companion, who reminds me daily that even the simplest walk can hold a little wonder. Together, we explore the magic tucked inside an ordinary life — the kind you only notice when you slow down, look closely, and let the world reveal itself one small moment at a time.
